Yes, Ghana’s most popular urban music genre, hiplife seems set to
receive a new boast! Hiplife group, VVIP has managed to pull in world
renowned actor and DJ, Idris Elba on the remix of their hit song,
‘Selfie’. ‘Selfie’ became the debut single when veteran music group, VIP
metamorphosed into VVIP after the introduction of the founder of
hiplife, Reggie Rockstone, as a new member. The single, spawned a new
movement, #selfiefriday on social media that has caught the attention of
the world, including the fast emerging new poster-boy of Hollywood, and
rumoured next James Bond ( and first Black Bond), Idris Elba!
The remix which I listened to exclusively, sees the British actor,
who is of Ghana and Sierra Leone roots, rapping in pidgin English and
refering to Hiplife as his new wife. Idris also makes a cheeky reference
to photobombing Oprah Winfrey’s much talked-about first selfie. In his
hooks, Idris says “Ask Oprah who taught her how to selfie”. Oprah made
headlines with first attempt at a selfie during the 45th annual NAACP
Image Awards in February this year. The media mogul wrote on Twitter
“My first selfie,” “Love @idriselba! #imageawards”, taking the photo
below. “Did I just photo bomb Oprah???” Elba tweeted along with a retweet of the 60-year-old “Butler” star’s twitpic.
